Starting with dropshipping

Starting with dropshipping

Congratulations! You are going to start your own dropshipping business. In our previous blog we explained what dropshipping is, so that you can make this decision with careful cosideration. The first step has been taken, the decision has been made. What’s next? Let the real work begin! This can be overwhelming, but with our six-step roadmap you will get there.

Research your market

Whatever type of business you want to start, offering services, a stock business or a dropshipping business, always start with extensive market research. Find out if there is a market for the products you want to sell. Who do you want to sell those products to (what is your niche, your target audience?)? Also look at your competition; what is your competition doing? By researching all of this, you have a greater chance of success with your business. Imagine that you want to sell selfie sticks and you come across many competitors who already offer that product, then it is useful to choose a different niche market or product group. This way you distinguish yourself from your competition and you have a better chance of success.

Register with the Chamber of Commerce

Now that you know what you want to sell, you are actually going to start your business. Now is the time to register your company with the Chamber of Commerce. As a drop shipment entrepreneur you have to pay tax and you cannot file a tax return without a Chamber of Commerce number.

Organize your finances

The starting capital required for a dropshipping company is not high; you do not have to take out a loan for a store, stock or other costs. Yet there are other costs that you should consider. The costs for a webshop and for marketing, for example. It is recommended to keep private and business accounts separate in order to maintain an overview.

Choose your suppliers

A dropshipping company stands and falls with a reliable supplier. So choosing such a person is one of your most important steps. Therefore, always research the supplier. Is it a reliable, stable company that you don’t expect to fail soon? Do they have enough stock? How is the service of this dropshipping supplier? Do they ensure a neat and timely shipment? Do parcels ever get lost? How do they deal with that? If possible, have a number of products delivered to yourself, so that you can check their quality yourself. Do they also have a warranty or returns procedure? Many dropshipping suppliers are located in China. These are often cheap, but you should ask yourself whether that is useful for your business.
Your customer satisfaction is (partly) determined by your supplier, so do not skip this step, but do extensive research.

Create your webshop and set up your online “shop window”

Create your own webshop (also think of registering your domain name!). Make sure that your online store looks beautiful, that your products and stocks are clear and that the process of ordering and paying is a breeze. With the right customer experience, you distinguish yourself from your competitors and ensure that your webshop is a success.
Webshop software can help you with this. If you have a thriving online store, you will often spend a large part of the day working in the back office of your online store. With good webshop software and a good administration panel you can process your orders easily and efficiently.
There are several players who offer web shop software. Compare them well. You can read how best to do this in one of our previous blogs (Webshop software – the choice is huge!).

Become a marketing expert

You can automate a lot with dropshipping. You also don’t have to worry about the time-consuming job of shipping; your supplier does that. This allows you to fully focus on the commercialization of the products. Take clear photos of your products, send marketing campaigns by e-mail, write clear and catchy product descriptions (don’t copy this literally from your supplier, other entrepreneurs probably receive this information too!) And publish relevant blogs. Also consider SEO and SEA. Do a careful keyword research and write unique content yourself. This increases the chance that you will be found via search engines such as Google. You could also advertise on Google (SEA), with which you earn customers (but earn less per customer because of the costs). By investing money and time in marketing, you can grow your sales.
